15 eCommerce Tips for a Great Retail User Experience
- Your site needs to be able to be used by a 5yr old! If your site isn’t easy to use, If it is hard to find products Or your site is just to slow then you are missing out on vital conversions, referrals and loyal customers
- Have a clean user experience, with light content for faster page load
- Make sure the experience is consistent from start to finish.
- Give users simple options, directing them quickly to where they want to go. Using demographically targeted content will aid in the user finding their way quickly
- Make your product range easily accessible with a clear user journey
- Allow users to get initial product information and then more detail with a single click, product popups are a great way to achieve this!
- Have clear and consistent navigation
- Use tones and contrast that allow people with vision impairment to see the site as best they can
- Create a circular user experience; people should always have three options on moving forward.

(3). Next relevant page - Video and large images are great but the need to be initiated by the user. If the file size is really large provide a warning to people on low broadband
- Have external links popup in a new window! Not the one they are using to browse your site
- JavaScript/Database calls that are taking a while to load should use a loading graphic that indicates the time remaining, people tend to panic and close browsers when nothing happens
- For returning visitors, make sure they are treated like a returning visitor, don’t show them content they already indicated they do not want
- Have a checkbox that allows the CC Billing details to flow into the shipping without the user filling out the details twice
- Use a secure, single page checkout, there is huge data to show that cart abandonment is dramatically reduced when using one.
