20 eCommerce Tips : Technical Considerations
- Make sure your forms use common names for fields so that they're recognized by toolbars that have an auto fill function
- If you do ship overseas don’t use the generic every country dropdown list its longs and not all the countries can be delivered too
- Have your site search allow for greater details such as SKU, Model numbers and even typos if possible.
- Have a live inventory!!! don’t sell product you no longer stock!
- Have an SSL certificate!
- make sure your site caters to the masses, try to be a standards compliant as possible!
- Test for both Mac and PC on all the major browsers, if your site does not cater for a particular browser let the user on that browser know when the site loads, don’t let them find out the hard way!
- Host your website in the same country as your market, but have backup sites just incase!
- Display your VAT and Company Registration details. These need to be visible to comply with most countries online legislations such as US,UK and Australia
- Use a Sitemap generator to see a full outline of the site, Submit this to Google
- Submit your sites keywords to Google. Make sure these keywords are actually used in the content also
- On Category pages, make sure you have content unique to that category for search indexing
- Avoid using dynamic URLs
- Ensure you have a hosting solution that allows for 24hr technical support and site backups, as well as alternate hosting locations if required.
- Make sure your hosting can be scaled up and down based on your campaign activity
- Take the time to sync your accounting software with your eCommerce solution, it will save vital rework in the long run.
- Have a JavaScript detection that swoops out flash content with a javascript version.
- Don’t just build for iPad tablets, build for html5 standards and tweak as required
- The more external plugins the more mess your server has to deal with, try to remove the code you don’t need!
