Christmas Sales: was the sky really falling?

For our first post of the year, We wanted to cover the “Christmas” retail sales

If you walked around the shops it was as if people were running around saying the sky is falling, sales staff looked defeated and had no sense of Christmas spirit. I personally walked around David Jones for 30mins trying to find a dress for my better half and no one walked up and ask if I was okay.(No guy is okay in the female section of David Jones!!). A lot of shoppers that were out and about kept saying “I will wait to the after Christmas sales!”, this was surprising! There was a lot of sales, a lot of crap out there too but still there were bargains to be found, I thought Giving someone a present at Christmas was the whole point not an IOU letter!

Just a thought?
Just putting it out there but what if the big stores ditched the after Christmas sales? What if it went back to the last 5 days before Christmas was when there was the real bargains and after the new year there were still sales but not cheaper than the 5 days before Christmas?
Think of the results!
1. Sales staff would put in more effort and possibly find a way to smile!
2. There would be more a festive feel to Christmas increasing the positive attitudes and encouraging the purchase.
3. People would have to plan their shopping properly!, They would go online do their research and be drawn in-store to really get the bargains.

As for online retail sales!
I have clients that had their online sales go up 600%, We helped them with basic, cost effective marketing strategies and the returns were fantastic. They also helped their in-store sales by creating simple click and collect strategies.

In the US they are waiting on the Christmas retail results as it expected to show that more people in the US bought online then in-store, and the stores that have properly invested in creating a great online Christmas retail experience, were the stores that have done very well bucking the trend!

Interactive help
Why are stores not using interactive touch screens to help people find what they want faster?  There could also alert people to where the deals are! Also a good way to Encourage people to sign-up for discounts and in-store promotions! Cause the discount cards no one wants to carry!

Hey The Big Stores!
One of my good friends is a store manager for the Good Guys, they made 250k on boxing day and 4.4mil in 4 days before Christmas. They are laughing, I know the staff in his store are friendly and helpful, but It begs the question, how many of the big stores played the Violin and really they actually made a nice amount of profit over the Christmas break, but they see playing the retail scare tactics as a  way of getting people in thinking they are coming for the bargains.

We would love to know what you think on the issue! Surely there is a way to buck the cycle!

This news is ecixting because it means the market is leaner and the consumer is getting the benefit. It should be interesting to see which companies will get better at managing their inventory levels and forecasting.
